The Gottfriedson Settlement Agreement

This pronouncement by Carolyn Bennett the Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, addresses the Federal Court of Canada's approve; of the Indian Residential Schools Day Scholars (Gottfriedson) Settlement Agreement.
The Indian Residential Schools Day Scholars (Gottfriedson) Settlement Agreement gives $10,000 in individual compensation to survivors and descendants of those who attended Residential Schools due to the continuing effects faced by Indigenous peoples today.
This decision came after the Gottfriedson Indian Residential Schools Day Scholar class action, which was intended for students who went to Residential Schools but did not stay there overnight.
This would occur if the Residential School was close to a reserve or community where some students could go back home, although these students were not eligible for compensation under the settlement agreement in 2007 despite still facing mistreatment and abuse.

Residential Schools Missing Children Community Support Funding

The Residential Schools missing children community support fund was created to help locate, document, maintain, and commemorate the sites where former residential school students were buried, and to help respond to the wishes of families who lost their children in this way.
Following the recent findings of further unmarked graves and burial sites in/near Residential Schools around the country, the Canadian government investment over $320 million into the fund.

In 2020, the Government of Canada designated four schools to be part of the National Program of Historical Commemoration and it includes Residential Schools sites in Saskatchewan, Ontario, Manitoba, and Nova Scotia.

National Indigenous Peoples Day

Following the release of the 1982 Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms the National Indian Brotherhood (a representative body for First Nations) called for the creation of "National Aboriginal Solidarity Day", which would occur annually on June 21st.
In June 1996, after even more pressure from events like the Oka Crisis and the 1995 RCAP report, National Aboriginal Day was officially declared.

Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada

This is the official page for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC), which was established with the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement with the aim to encourage reconciliation between those impacted by residential schools and the rest of Canada.
The Canadian government invested over $72 million into the TRC and has engaged with communities, hosted events, and educated people across the country about the history of residential schools.
In 2015, the commission concluded with final report, which included 94 calls to action for furthering the reconciliation process.
