George W. Bush's Address After 9/11
  • Nine days following the September 11th 2001 attacks on the United States, George W. Bush addressed both houses of Congress and presented a speech of thanks to countries around the world.
  • As President Bush listed off places like France, Germany, South Korea, Egypt, Australia, Africa, Latin America, Pakistan, Israel, India, El Salvador, Iran Mexico, Japan and Britain for doing their part to commemorate and remember the event that occurred on American soil, he did not mention Canada.
  • Following the terrorist attacks, the Canadian city of Gander, Newfoundland became a safe haven for over 30,000 stranded American travelers.
  • This event has remained a cornerstone of Canada's efforts to aid the US in a time of crisis and hardship and thousands of Canadians opened up their homes and volunteered their time to help the travelers.
  • The 9/11 terrorist attacks killed 24 Canadians and ever since the event, Canada, and other countries alike, began committing to strong anti-terrorism efforts alongside the US in passing anti-terrorism laws and sending troops to Afghanistan as part of the "War on Terror".
