The Confederation of Tomorrow Survey of Canadians has released a report on the levels of confidence that Canadians have in their political leaders, experts, and in the media. The report found that most Canadians continue to express confidence in scientists and medical experts but less so in business leaders, governments, and political leaders. The Brian Mulroney Institute of Government is a proud partner in the study along with the Centre of Excellence on the Canadian Federation, the Canada-West Foundation, the First Nations Financial Management Board, and the Centre D’Analyse Politique – Constitution et Fédéralisme. The survey was conducted by the Environics Institute for Survey Research.
Conducted in the early months of 2023, the Confederation of Tomorrow Survey of Canadians asked Canadians about their confidence in leaders in various sectors. The survey was a follow up on the survey done in 2021 amidst the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2023, the survey focused on longer-term trends in the evolution of how Canadians see leaders in different sectors and organizations, including science, politics, business, environmental groups, and Indigenous governance organizations. Notably, the survey found that confidence has declined in recent years in several sectors, though confidence in political leaders and in governments is higher today than it was 30 years ago.
