Prince Edward Island Human Rights Act
  • In the province of Prince Edward Island, the Human Rights Act protects all people living in or visiting the island from discrimination based on certain characteristics and in certain areas.
  • The grounds of discrimination include: age, association, colour, race, ethnic or national origin, creed or religion, criminal conviction, disability, family or marital status, gender expression, gender identity, having filed a complaint or given evidence/assistance under the Human Rights Act, political belief, sex, sexual orientation, and source of income.
  • The protected areas include: accommodations, employment, lease or sale of property, membership in organizations (professional, business, trade or employee), publications, broadcasts, public displays, advertisements, services and facilities available to the public, and volunteer work.
  • The original PEI Human Rights Legislation was passed by the legislature in 1968 but was not enforced by a full-time and permanent Commission until 1975.
