James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement
  • This is the James bay and Northern Quebec Agreement, which is an agreement made in 1975 between the Government of Quebec, the Government of Canada, Hydro-Quebec, the Grand Council of the Cree of Quebec, and the Northern Quebec Inuit Association.
  • The agreement was made following the Calder et al. v. Attorney-General (1973) case and it changed the future of the relationship between the Quebec government and the Indigenous peoples of that region.
  • This agreement was developed because of the Quebec government's influence over the hydroelectric energy production within the James Bay region.
  • This energy production was occurring without consultation of the Indigenous peoples who lived on the land, which resulted in retaliation from the Indigenous peoples and eventually a Superior court ruling against the government's development.
  • This is the full document (containing 454 pages) of the components of the agreement.
