Muir v. Alberta, 1996
  • In 1996, Leilani Muir won a lawsuit against the Manitoba government who forced her sterilization without her knowledge.
  • This case had national implications for the rights of persons with disabilities and their mistreatment during Canada's history of eugenic practices, which forced the sterilization of countless Canadians.
  • Muir obtained compensation for her mistreatment, which opened up the doors for hundreds of other cases of citizens who were sterilized in the 1900's under laws intending to prevent persons with mental disabilities from passing on their genes.
