The Confederation of Tomorrow Survey of Canadians has released a report on views of Canadians on government. The report tracked results from surveys conducted between 2019 and 2023. The Brian Mulroney Institute of Government is a proud partner in the study along with the Centre of Excellence on the Canadian Federation, the Canada-West Foundation, the First Nations Financial Management Board, and the Centre D’Analyse Politique – Constitution et Fédéralisme. The survey was conducted by the Environics Institute for Survey Research.
The most recent round of the survey was conducted in January and February 2023. The survey asked Canadians a series of questions about whether the COVID-19 pandemic shifted Canadian preferences about the role of government. The pandemic initially prompted more Canadians to see governments as having a positive impact, but this was temporary. Overall, the pandemic had no discernible impact on preferences for a more centralized or decentralized federation.
