National Indigenous Peoples Day
  • Following the release of the 1982 Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms the National Indian Brotherhood (a representative body for First Nations) called for the creation of "National Aboriginal Solidarity Day", which would occur annually on June 21st.
  • In June 1996, after even more pressure from events like the Oka Crisis and the 1995 RCAP report, National Aboriginal Day was officially declared.
