The Brian Mulroney Institute of Government is pleased to welcome The Honourable Michelle Thompson, Minister of Health and Wellness and MLA for Antigonish. Minister Thompson will be speaking about the Action for Health plan, the Houston government’s multi-year strategic plan for improving the health care system in Nova Scotia. The plan addresses long-standing issues in health care across several areas, including the recruitment and retention of health-care professionals, access to care, and outdated physical and digital infrastructure.

The Honourable Michelle Thompson

A female leader and community volunteer, The Honourable Michelle Thompson was first elected to the Nova Scotia House of Assembly as MLA for Antigonish in 2021. A proud Cape Bretoner who now calls Antigonish home, Minister Thompson has resided in the community of Cloverville with her husband Darren for over 25 years. As a mother of three, Minister Thompson extensively engaged with the community through her previous involvement as a board member of the Antigonish Celtics Soccer Club, the PHAST swim team, L’Arche, and Arts Health Antigonish.

Having held various prominent positions in the health care sector, Minister Thompson possesses a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities within the provincial health system. Michelle has been a Registered Nurse for 30 years, working both on the front lines as a care provider and in leadership roles. Prior to becoming MLA, Minister Thompson held the role of CEO at RK MacDonald Nursing Home in Antigonish, was the president of the Continuing Care Association of Nova Scotia, taught nursing part-time at St. Francis Xavier University, and has served as a part-time therapist for a non-profit organization.
