Great Lakes Basin Compact
- The Great Lakes Commission (GLC) was created in 1955 by the Great Lakes Basin Compact.
- By 1968, the United States Congress consented to the Compact and the interstate compact agency along with the commission.
- The Great Lakes Basin Compact was a legally binding interstate compact that details how to manage and use the Great Lakes' water supply and involved the states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, which also includes the Premiers of Ontario and Quebec because of the pre-existing Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Basin Sustainable Water Resources Agreement that included the Canadian Premiers.
- The Great Lakes Commission was created to carry out the terms and requirements outlined in the Lakes Basin Compact so that member states could speak with a unified voice on matters concerning the Great Lakes.
