Canadian Human Rights Commission

  • The Canadian Human Rights Commission is an independent organization that supervises and oversees human rights in Canada.
  • They are responsible for representing the public interest and keeping the Canadian government accountable with issues relating to human rights.

Canadian Civil Liberties Association

  • ​​​​​​​The Canadian Civil Liberties Association is a nonprofit organization in Canada, which was founded in 1964 and has been devoted to the defence of civil liberties and constitutional rights ever since. 

Ligue des droits et libertés

  • This Montreal-based non-profit human rights organization (known originally as the Quebec Civil Liberties Union and now the League of Rights and Freedoms) was founded in 1963 and was among the founding organizations in defending human rights in Canada.
  • The League's main mission is to publicize, defend and promote the universality, indivisibility and interdependence of human rights.

  • The National Association of Women and the Law is a not-for-profit feminist organization, founded in 1974, that promotes the equality of women through legal education, research, and law reform advocacy.

The Canadian Council on Children and Youth (CCYA)

The Canadian Council for Exceptional Children (CEC)

  • The CEC is a leading organization of educators dedicated to advancing the success of children with physical and mental disabilities. In the 1970s, this organization was instrumental in advocating for child care and education for children with disabilities as human rights.

Canadian Abortion Rights Action League

The Canadian Council on Social Development

  • The Canadian Council on Social Development has been around for over 100 years and was at the heart of some of Canada's most foundational social policy/human rights policy.
  • This includes establishing employment insurance, disability and old age pensions, etc.

The National Anti-Poverty Organization

  • The National Anti-Poverty Organization was founded in 1971 with the mission to represent the interests of low-income individuals in Canada.
  • This organization helped lobby for socio-economic and labour rights including rest and leisure, paid holidays, and mobility rights for welfare recipients.

Egale Canada (Equality for Gays and Lesbians Everywhere)

Canadian Council of the Blind (CCB) 

  • The CBB was founded in 1944 by Canadian war veterans and schools of the blind.
  • This organization alongside the Canadian National Institute for the Blind highlighted discrimination against individuals with visual impairments in employment along side other practices: being banned from sitting on juries; harsh immigration policies; denied minimum wage; and prohibitions on marriage for people with mental disabilities.
