The Confederation of Tomorrow Survey of Canadians has released a report on public opinion about support for the rights of Indigenous Peoples in Canada and the process of reconciliation. The Brian Mulroney Institute of Government is a proud partner in the study along with the First Nations Financial Management Board, the Canada-West Foundation, The Centre of Excellence on the Canadian Federation, and the Centre D’Analyse Politique – Constitution et Fédéralisme. The survey was conducted by the Environics Institute for Survey Research.
The Confederation of Tomorrow surveyed Canadians regarding their thoughts on support for Indigenous rights and reconciliation. The surveys were completed between January and February 2023. Participants included people who self-identified as Indigenous (e.g., First Nations, Métis, and Inuit). The surveys noted a promising trend toward greater support for Indigenous rights and the progress of reconciliation. Opinions have continued to evolve in positive ways, including a majority of those surveyed being optimistic for the prospect of reconciliation. Of note is the identification of the continued need for more dialogue, information, and education to bring Indigenous Peoples and non-Indigenous Canadians closer together.
